Cover of Freedom Train

Detailing the memories of Thom Poole during the turmoil of the end of Communism, through his personal journeys in 1989 and 1991 by train around Europe. This book was compiled of diary entries and original photos taken during the journies, and demonstrate how this tumultuous political change affected the continent.

How This Book Came About

In travelling around Europe, Thom kept a diary and carried a heavy camera around, taking in all the sights. The Hungarian border to the West had just opened up and the East Germans were escaping through it, but he didn't expect that he would be in the middle of such momentus events when he planned the trip. The book is divided into two sections - the second part is the rerun of the journey two years later, where Thom revisits some of the places, and visits some of the people he met during the first trip.
